The 7 and 8-year-old Red Devils Black team opened their season on the road in Lindenhurst against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 12. The team started on the defense as Bradley Bieselin broke up a lateral pass for an 8-yard loss. Bradley was assisted by Alfredo Ruiz. The defense held and Lindenhurst punted.
Running back Dylan Thomas started offensive attack. He made runs of three and 7 yards for a first down, but a Red Devils fumble gave the Bulldogs the ball on Levittown's 47-yard line. Safety Alex Cohen made a touchdown-saving tackle on a reverse play. The Bulldogs scored on the next play to make the score 7-0.
Black went on to the attack, as running back Scott Rogan rushed 7 yards for a first down. On 4th and 8 when the drive seemed to stall, quarterback Dylan Gruber made the highlight reel with a textbook fake hand-off. He fooled everyone and ran 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was incomplete and the score was 7-6.
Black went back to work on defense. Brodie Nuzzi, with help from James Schaeffer, squashed a run. Defensive backs James McQuillan, Danny O'Brien, John Harris and Adrian Boyd all contributed with hard hits, but the Bulldogs would not be denied and the half ended 13-6.
Black opened the second half featuring running back Jack Kerner. He rushed for two consecutive first downs. Alex Choen ran for one and the tying drive was under way. Punching holes for these backs were James Murphy, Paul Greco and Danny Bosch. Joseph Tracey threw off his man and Dylan Thomas helped open up holes as well. A fumble was recovered by the Bulldogs and Levittown was running out of time.
Mike Mone sacked a Bulldog running back on consecutive plays, forcing a punt. Time ran out and the game ended 13-6. Black coaches Paul Gruber, Steve Sauers, Ed Cohen and Carmine Ciserano offered players encouragement and guidance.
