Each school year the Levittown Kiwanis Club sponsors a Terrific Kids Program in each of the elementary and middle schools in the Levittown and Island Trees Districts. The schools decide the criteria a child must meet in order to be designated a Terrific Kid and determines how many students receive this designation. Members of the club go to each of the schools throughout the year and present certificates and Terrific Kid bumper stickers to the students. Last year approximately 900 students in the Levittown and Island Trees School Districts attained Terrific Kid status for the 2003-2004 school year. This program is coordinated each year by club members Mary and George Orth. Please stay tuned for the dates and locations of this year's Terrific Kids programs.
The New York District of Kiwanis has been with the Alzheimer's Foundation to help fight this tragic disease. These cooperative effort has been led by Levittown Kiwanian Steve Haller who was recently honored by the New York District for his dedication. For more than 20 years, the Alzheimer's Association has provided reliable information, created supportive programs and services for families, increased resources for dementia research, and influenced changes in public policy. The Levittown Kiwanis Club invites those interested in helping in the fight against Alzheimer's to join the Long Island Memory Walk which will be taking place at Eisenhower Park on Oct. 2. The Levittown Kiwanis Club will have a team of walkers as well as volunteers helping at the event. Please contact Mauro Cassano at 796-3392 for more information.
