The Levittown Kmart, one of the few Kmart establishments left in the area after a string of local closures early last year, was sold to The Home Depot, Inc. late last month. The Levittown location is one of 18 stores across the country the company agreed to sell to The Home Depot in recent months. The Levittown establishment , the last operating Kmart in Nassau County, is scheduled to close sometime in October. In addition to Levittown, other Nassau County Kmart locations included Syosset and Westbury, which closed in January of last year. Local Kmart locations still currently operating include West Babylon, Rosedale and Huntington.
While the next rumored stage for this location concerning some local residents is the assumable move-in of a Home Depot store, no plans for this have yet been announced. According to the Town of Hempstead, no applications have been filed with the Board of Zoning Appeals or any other governing body for renovations of the site. Some, however, believe that applications may not need to be filed and that a Home Depot may be able to just move in, without the community receiving forewarning. This is dependent on what renovations the company would want to make to the site and whether or not those renovations would be to the interior or exterior of the building.
Upon contacting the Home Depot via e-mail last week, the Tribune learned that the company currently does "not show any store openings scheduled for Levittown, NY" but is growing so quickly that they hope to have nearly 2,000 stores by the end of fiscal year 2004.
