Last year's ceremony featured a sand sculpture of the Twin Towers, created by artist Artie Knapp, under which residents were invited to place sand dollars with written messages to their loved ones. At this year's ceremony, the Twin Towers will be depicted in the form of an ice sculpture, with a sand base once again to be created by Knapp. Attendees will be invited to write messages to their lost loved ones on American flags which will be placed around the base of the sculpture.
The supervisor invites all residents who have been impacted by the events of September 11, 2001, to join in the beachfront gathering.
"The devastating events of September 11, 2001 impacted our lives greatly and forever left a void in our hearts," Murray said. "In the midst of this tragedy, we have united as a nation and have continued to draw upon each other for support."
In addition to being joined by members of the clergy and family of those who perished on September 11, 2001, this year's ceremony will also feature the serene and soothing instrumentation of a harpist. The Levittown Fire Department has also once again offered to provide a fire truck and bell for a moment of silence and a department member will provide the singing of the national anthem.
"The many Long Islanders who have attended in the past have found this ceremony to be moving," the supervisor said. "I hope that you can join us on the morning of September 11th as we seek solace with one another in remembering the heroes who perished in the terrorist attacks of three years ago."
