Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray shows off her furry friend from the town's animal shelter as participants from the press conference look on. Against a backdrop of peace signs and tie-dye motifs, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, along with some cuddly friends from the town's animal shelter, recently announced the "Summer of Love" pet adoption program. At a press conference held earlier this month at the Mall at The Source in Westbury, the supervisor discussed her plans to wave a complement of fees at the town's animal shelter for pets that are adopted during the summer season.

"Hempstead Town is giving new meaning to the term "free love" made popular in the 1960s," said Murray. "By waiving adoption fees and other charges, neighbors are experiencing the joy of pet ownership without the financial burden."

The supervisor's proposed program provides for the abatement of adoption and rabies shot fees now through August 14 for dogs and cats adopted from Hempstead Town's Animal Shelter. A similar program was held during the holiday season, where the town waived adoption and other various fees for its "Home for the Holidays" Program.

"By rescinding these fees, we are making the pet owning experience more affordable," said the supervisor. "Those who adopt a dog or cat will save $40."

In addition to the elimination of the adoption and rabies shot fees, proud pet adopters will receive a free gift for their new furry family member. "I would like to thank Mutts and Butts of Merrick and Pet Supplies Plus in West Hempstead, Oceanside and Valley Stream for generously donating a variety of pet gift items that will be given to those who participate in the 'Summer of Love' program," said Murray. P.A.W.S. is also offering free spaying and neutering services to any pet adopted from the shelter during the program.

Anyone interested in viewing pets that are available for adoption can visit Hempstead Town's website at www.TOH.LI and use the Petfinder link. Additionally, the town invites pet lovers to visit the animal shelter at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, prospective pet owners can call the shelter at 785-5220.

"The 'Summer of Love' pet adoption program is the perfect way to fill your life with joy and you can also ensure that a wonderful pet experiences a warm and caring home environment," Murray concluded.
