Hempstead Town is giving new meaning to the term "free love" made popular in the 1960s. Through the "Summer of Love" pet adoption program, the town is waiving a complement of fees at Hempstead Town's Animal Shelter for pets that are adopted during the summer season. By waiving adoption fees and other charges, residents can experience the joy of pet ownership without the financial burden.

The program provides for the abatement of adoption and rabies shot fees until Aug. 14 for dogs and cats adopted from the animal shelter. By rescinding these fees, the town is making the pet owning experience more affordable. Those who adopt a dog or cat will save $40.

In addition to the elimination of the adoption and rabies shot fees, proud pet adopters will receive a free gift. Mutts n' Butts of Merrick and Pet Supplies Plus in West Hempstead, Oceanside and Valley Stream have generously donated a variety of pet gift items. P.A.W.S. is also offering free spaying and neutering services to any pet adopted from the shelter during the program.

Additionally, the town invites pet lovers to visit the animal shelter at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
