The Levittown Kiwanis Club welcomed two new members to the organization last month. Steve Beery, owner of Mr. Beery's, located on Hempstead Turnpike, was installed as a member on June 17. In addition to being a local business owner, Steve is a lifelong resident of the area and is a graduate of Island Trees High School. Ron Hinz, the new owner of Petite II Florist, became an official member on June 24. In order to become a member of Kiwanis those interested must attend three meeting and then the prospective members are voted on by the board of directors. The club was thrilled to have Steve Beery and Ron Hinz, two active members of the community, join the Levittown Kiwanis Club.
The club is expecting to induct several new members in the coming weeks and encourages anyone interested in joining to attend a meeting. The Levittown Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at:
La Focaccia Restaurant
70 East Village Green
Levittown, NY 11756
Telephone 796-4461
Please note that during July and August the club only meets every other week. The next meeting of the Levittown Kiwanis Club is Thursday, July 8.
The Levittown Kiwanis Club will be sending 11 students from Levittown and Island Trees schools to Kamp Kiwanis this summer. Kamp Kiwanis is a summer camp run by the New York District of Kiwanis. Each club in the district sends children from their community who may not otherwise have an opportunity to go to camp to Kamp Kiwanis. The Levittown Kiwanis Club raises funds for this endeavor through a number of fund-raisers. In addition Kiwanians make donations to the Kamp Kiwanis fund throughout the year and a few members of the club have sponsored campers.
Each school year the Levittown Kiwanis Club sponsors a Terrific Kids Program in each of the elementary and middle schools in the Levittown and Island Trees Districts. The schools decide the criteria a child must meet in order to be designated a Terrific Kid and determines how many students receive this designation. Members of the club go to each of the schools throughout the year and present certificates and Terrific Kid bumper stickers to the students. This year approximately 900 students in the Levittown and Island Trees School Districts attained Terrific Kid status for the 2003-2004 school year. The club would like to congratulate each of the students and their parents on this achievement.
The Levittown Kiwanis Club would also like to thank Mary and George Orth, club members who have coordinated this program each year. Other members of the club assist at the individual schools but the program would not be as successful without the Orth's dedication.
Look for the Kiwanis Korner in the Levittown Tribune every week.
