Local high school graduates PJ Antoniato of Division, Chris Sipp of MacArthur and Greg Thomson of Island Trees have all just finished their college seasons and have had the good fortune of having their teams selected to play in the college regional at various locations around the country. Chris played for Stony Brook, in the Eastern Regionals, while PJ and Greg played for St. John's University and got to go to the far west regional and play against Long Beach State, Stanford and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
St. John's lost a 4-3 thriller to eventual champ Long Beach State. PJ Antoniato was 1 for 3 with a homer while Greg Thomson had 2 hits. Other Long Island players who played that day were Chris Joachim of Massapequa and Chris Hanson of Glen Cove.
In game two, St. John's won over UNLV by a score of 9-6 as Greg Thomson had another big day. In game three, St. John's was eliminated by Stanford by a score of 7-2. PJ and Greg both starred again as they both racked up multiple hit games.
PJ goes on a list of Division grads who have played in the National Regional Tournament. Graduate Frank Russo (1980) played in the '83 and '84 Regionals with the University of Miami, before going on to play minor league ball for Cincinatti. James Chenevey, a 1983 grad, played for Harvard in the 84 Regionals and later became a fifth round pick of the Oakland Athletics. Chris Faicco was a 1984 member of Division's first state championship team and played in the Regionals on two occasions with the Fordham Rams. Grad Scott Hatten, class of 89, who presently coaches Lamar University, made it to the Southern Regionals as a coach this year losing to Rice University. Scott had the pleasure of playing for Lamar in 1993 in the Regional at Texas A&M. In that Regional Scott played against his Division teammate Tom Hutchinson, who played for Yale and later played ball for the Montreal Expo Minor League system.
Lastly Shawn Fagan played in the Super Regional for Penn State against the University of Texas in 2000. Shawn was later drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and is presently playing for their Triple AAA team in Syracuse where he is batting second and playing first base.
This list does not include a long list of Division graduates who have played in the National Junior College championships in Grand Junction, Colorado. Some of those players include Wally Baecht, Pat Rielly, Alan Stolzberg, Doug Robins, Andy Dimonda, Elliot Velez and Jim Sparrow.
As you look closely, not only did these players distinguish themselves on the field but they also went on to some very impressive academic schools and did well academically.
Levittown looks forward to seeing more of its graduates playing on the big stage in the upcoming years.
