The purpose of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce is to promote and protect business interests in the Levittown community.
The Chamber holds its general meeting on the third Wednesday of the month rotating between breakfast, luncheon or dinner, at different locations to allow chamber member eateries the opportunity to host and showcase their establishments. Meetings are generally very well attended providing excellent networking opportunities. For information on meetings dates and locations, call the chamber office at 520-8000 or check the website at www.levittownchamber.org.
There are many benefits to membership in the Chamber. One of the most recent being afforded to members who attend our monthly meetings is the opportunity to have their business card drawn in a raffle to be selected as the business to be featured in the Chamber Corner's monthly Spotlight on Business. April's winner of the raffle was Frank Mormando, proprietor of North and South Levittown Lanes.
The next general meeting of the Chamber is on Wednesday, June 16 at 6 P. M. at La Focaccia in the East Village Green on Jerusalem Avenue, Levittown (796-4461). All are welcomed.
Levittown Lanes is a second generation, family owned business started by the Mormando family in February 1954 with the purchase of the North Levittown Lanes and the addition of the South Levittown Lanes in 1956.
Starting as two 16 lane bowling centers, each with pin boys, a restaurant and a catering hall, Levittown Lanes has grown to be two state-of-the-art 36 lane bowling centers, complete with Pro Shop and Sports Bar. They are the only privately owned and run recreation centers in Levittown.
Levittown Lanes host many community-oriented programs, such as Police Activity League (PAL) Bowling Leagues, Levittown Island Trees Youth Program, after school programs for all local elementary schools, and many specialized programs for seniors, juniors and adults, with separate programs for the physically and mentally challenged. In the past, they have run high school and collegiate bowling programs that provide physical education accreditation.
The Summer Bowling Bonanza, which offers one free bowling game per day for every day of the summer vacation for all school age children, is administered by Levittown Lanes and co-sponsored by the P. A. L., the Levittown, Island Trees, East Meadow and Westbury school districts. Levittown Lanes has given away tens of thousands of free games in the past five years.
Owner/Operator Frank Mormando is community relations chairperson of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, coordinating the Holiday Tree Lighting event and the Community Health Fair. Frank also serves on the Annual Golf Classic Committee for Yours Ours Mine Community Center.
Mr. Mormando was recipient of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award for 2003 and was selected by the COC as the 2004 honoree at the Levittown School District's Recognition Night. His civic mindedness led him to the presidency of the Nassau County Bowling Proprietors Association in 1994 and has kept him active with many local associations.
Both bowling centers host fund-raisers for not-for-profit organizations, open their doors for corporate functions, birthday parties, and special events. For more information, call Frank Mormando or Paul LaMar at 735-3900 or check out the website at www.levittownbowling.com.
