This past week, the Division Avenue Blue Dragons beat a very strong Bethpage team 6-1. Kevin Gerard was the winning pitcher for Division, allowing only two hits while striking out nine batters.
Offensive stars for Division were Joe Cardone with two hits, including a two-run triple that gave Division a two-run lead; James Hickey, who added a hit and an RBI; Brian Chenicek, who had two hits while Dan De Vivo had an RBI hit. Garrett Douglas had Division's first hit and scored the Dragons' first run.
On Tuesday, the Dragons found themselves down 2-0 going into the last inning when they came to life scoring two runs to tie a very good Wantagh team. Joe Seide and Zach Flinn combined to hold Wantagh to two runs. Dan De Vivo got things going for Division with a single and he later scored on a throwing error. One pitch later Garrett Douglas scored the tying run with a fantastic hook slide when Joe Cardone singled him home. Both James Hickey and Kevin Gerard sparkled defensively for Division.
It should be noted that Chris Carbone, a senior, keenly observed that a Wantagh batter missed first on a double in the late innings that led to a successful appeal, that the umpire acknowledged thwarting a Wantagh rally.
Saturday, the Dragons made up a rain out against Lynbrook, a returning league championship team. The Dragons exploded for six runs early, as Joe Cardone doubled, Jim Hickey singled, Brian Chenicek doubled, Tom Brussel singled home two, Dan De Vivo walked and Kevin Gerard homered. Big hitters for Division were Joe Cardone (who had two hits), Jim Hickey (three hits, three runs and two RBIs), and Chris Lombardo (three hits, an RBI and a run scored).
Garrett Douglas was the winning pitcher, after getting off to a slow start. He finished strong allowing only three hits. Zach Flinn came in and finished the last two innings, striking out five batters.
Next week the Dragons play a much improved Jericho team. The Dragons are at Jericho at 11 at home Wednesday at 4:30 and visiting at Jericho again on Thursday at 4:45.
