The Wantagh Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WLVAC) is asking residents to help support their community. The organization is actively seeking EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), EMT-CCs (critical care) and EMT Ps (paramedics).
The WLVAC has been in the community for nearly five decades. Located at 129 Balsam (commercial part of building is on Hempstead Turnpike, next to Meineke), the organization originally acted like a transportation outfit for the community, then progressed to 911 response. They have been serving the community since 1956. According to Lieutenant Richard Teuten, many emergency service groups have recently seen a decline in membership of firefighters and paramedics.
"Everybody seems to be hurting," he said. The lieutenant added that organization members aren't necessarily only residents of communities surrounding Levittown and Wantagh, but expand as far as Massapequa and New Hyde Park. "Everybody in the community is welcome," Tueten said.
"If you're a riding member, we require only about 16 hours a month - that's all we're asking for," Teuten added. "But as in any other volunteer organization, you must have some kind of commitment."
The lieutenant further stated that it's very simple to become a member. Anybody who is interested in joining the Wantagh Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps is asked to call 520-3002 and leave a message for the chief of operations.
