The Island Trees Wrestling team won their first county championship since 1984, defeating Plainedge 36-13 in the final. The Bulldogs defeated Jericho 49-21 in the 1st round. In the quarterfinals, the team defeated Clarke 49-20. In a rematch of an earlier league match the Bulldogs defeated Bethpage 31-24 to advance to the final. In the final, Plainedge came in as the favorite. Plainedge defeated the Bulldogs 29-22 in a highly competitive match two weeks earlier. In the final, the Bulldogs got on the board first when Joe Cusker defeated his opponent 11-7. After three straight losses, sophomore Dan Eberlein got the Bulldogs started with a 7-6 decision at 130 lbs. The Bulldogs then recorded back to back pins at 125 and 140 lbs. by Tom Cipley and Kevin Cusker. Kevin avenged 2 earlier season losses to his opponent, pinning him with a body lock in the 3rd. Senior Shawn VanHouten then recorded a 7-2 decision at 145. After junior Mike Cama defeated his highly regarded opponent 2-1, the Bulldogs had a 24-9 lead. The match was sealed by freshman Ever Reyes Perez who used a late takedown and back points to defeat his opponent 11-7. Senior Anthony Vecchione defeated his opponent 8-4 to give the Bulldogs a 30-12 lead going into the last match. Senior Greg Schwab punctuated the win by pinning his opponent with a huge body lock in the 1st period. The team would like to thank all the fans for all their continued support.
