Though MacArthur's starting lineup up consists mostly of sophomores and juniors the wrestlers have made a huge statement in both dual meet and tournament wrestling. The Generals were crowned tournament champions at the Nassau County Cup on Dec. 20. The wrestlers defeated Massapequa, East Meadow, Long Beach and the rest of Nassau County's elite wrestling schools.
By invitation, MacArthur's wrestling team was selected to represent Nassau County in the Long Island Challenge on Jan. 3 and 4. Massapequa, East Meadow and Bethpage were also chosen. Sachem, Islip, William Floyd and Rocky Point were selected to represent Suffolk County.
The Generals first defeated Rocky Point. In the second round, MacArthur suffered a tough loss to Sachem's veteran squad. MacArthur quickly recovered and wrestled East Meadow, which the Generals defeated by a convincing margin. Massapequa had also lost to #2 state ranked Islip High School. MacArthur then battled Massapequa and the match went back and forth, but the young Generals won nine out of the 13 matches. The Generals now have Nassau's top ranking. They won the Bronze Medal at the LI Challenge.
Though the Generals start five sophomores and five juniors, they already won three strong tournaments. Coach Greenblatt and the Generals' staff is very pleasantly surprised by the Generals' impressive showings. Coach Greenblatt commented on a few of the seniors stepping into leadership roles: Ed Loscalzo, Brian Sciubba, Matt Myers and Keith Meredith. Senior Ed Loscalzo commented that MacArthur's goal is to win a fourth consecutive Nassau County title. They will continue to improve as their intensive practice standards and grueling schedule to keep them ahead of the pack.
