The Lady Dawgs got off to a great start in their league season by defeating Clarke H.S. 45-23. The girls jumped out quickly using their full court press to lead 27-9 at the half. Kate Schamberger led the way with 12 point and Kate Tolan added 10 points to lead the Lady Dawgs offensively. Gina Brewer led the defense holding Clarke's leading scorer to just 2 points. The Lady Dawgs next game was against East Meadow H.S. The game was close throughout with the Lady Dawgs winning in the end 50-45. Gina Brewer scored 11 of her team high 12 points in the decisive 4th quarter. Lauren Mason provided a spark off the bench with 6 points. Samantha Modik, Alyssa Fleming and Lisa LoFaso led the defense with their tenacious pressure.
The Island Trees Wrestling team defeated Roslyn in dramatic fashion 36-33. The team had pins by sophomores Joe Cusker and Tom Santamauro. Juniors Mike Cama and Juan Marin both scored big wins for the Bulldogs. Senior Anthony Vecchione sealed the win with a 1st period pin at 189. Senior Shawn VanHouten scored a 2nd period pin to keep the Bulldogs in the lead. The match of the night featured 2nd ranked Mike Kessler of Roslyn vs. 7th ranked Dan Eberlein of Island Trees. Danny made this match his coming out party by recording a 7-4 decision and putting his name into the mix for a Nassau County title.
Congratulations to the Girls 7th grade Volleyball team on their win over Salk. The Lady Dogs played their best match to date this season winning 3 straight games to clinch the victory. Meghan Biondolillo, Briana Meehan, Alison Gronenthal, Angelina DeLardi and Megan Hollett had amazing serving runs, while Danielle Doller, Laura Benvenuto, Meghan Carey, Ashley Moore and Stephanie Kaiser displayed tremendous hustle on the court. Christina Merrill, Rebecca Burleson, Michelle Duffy and Jillian McGovern all made notable saves. Jill Foster, Nichole Coradini, Deanna Brown, Alyssa Ambrosio and Jackie Michelsen also need to be commended on their excellent use of communication.
The 8th grade Boys Basketball team played an outstanding game to defeat a tough Wantagh team. Showing their heart and character, the team came back from 10 points down in the 3rd period to win the game. With 47 seconds left and the Bulldogs down by 2, Frank Baglivo went to the foul line and calmly sank both foul shots to tie the game. After a great defensive stop, Baglivo set up Ronnie Modik for the winning basket and the Bulldogs hung on for the victory. Baglivo led the way with 14 points and Modik added 13 points. Jessie Matarese chipped in with 9 points and provided tough defense on the blocks. Justin Heisig and Arton Lekaj each scored 6 points apiece. Matt Condy, Robert Owens, Eric O'Reilly, Chris Henken, John Bruno and Matt D'Albenzio played their best defensive games of the season against the bigger antagh team.
The 7th grade Boys' Basketball team improved their record to 8-1 with an exciting win over Mattlin Middle School. It was an extremely close game until the final period, when the Bulldogs pulled away and won by a score of 55-44. The team's defense and rebounding continues to improve each game. The player of the game was Tom Hart, who had 8 points and grabbed over 6 rebounds in one of his best outings of the season. John Howard dominated the paint once again, dropping 20 points. John Thearle broke down the Mattlin defense with his cuts to the basket and strong shooting as he scored 11 points. Also scoring for the team were Ryan Tolan and Nick Bruzzese with 4 points, Matt Passatempo had 3 and Chris Hunt, Mike Pellegrino and Dylan Caragher each had a basket.
