Henry Albert Klar was born in Brooklyn on April 10, 1916. After graduating from Lincoln High School and St. John's University he received his LLB from Brooklyn Law School in 1938 and his LLM from Brooklyn Law School in 1939. After serving three years in the US Army, achieving the rank of master sergeant during WWII, Mr. Klar formed a company called Henry A. Klar Realty in 1947. After the war, the American veterans were starting the growth of suburbia by moving eastward from Queens through LI. Mr. Klar was instrumental in this growth by representing hundreds of new home developments, and ultimately condominium communities, a year and by handling sales and marketing as well as legal contracts, mortgages and closings. During his 28 year tenure from 1947 to 1975, Mr. Klar was responsible for over 40,000 home sales, primarily on LI. He was an early and active member of the LI Builders Institute. With offices starting in Queens, eventually Mr. Klar opened offices in the eastward expansion in Hempstead, East Meadow and Huntington. At its peak, Klar Realty had hundreds of licensed real estate sales personnel working for the firm, making it the largest new home sales firm on LI. Using his administrative skills gained in the Army as headquarters master sergeant, and his legal expertise, Mr. Klar streamlined the company to vertically integrate all the phases of the home buying experience. This helped the developers and buyers in the mass production of homes achieve quick contract signings, mortgage approvals and speedy home closings. Mr. Klar pioneered such actions as conducting night and weekend contract signings, inventing the name for the split ranch as the "splanch" and many other innovative consumer friendly methods to make the home buying process simpler and easier. He worked with all the major newspapers of the day to market homes using every innovative method working with the best advertising minds of Madison Avenue. He was also instrumental in selling land to developers for many of their projects. Mr. Klar was the selling agent for the first condominium built in the State of NY in Valley Stream. In 1960, he was approached by Alfred Levitt who had just broken up his partnership with William J. Levitt while they were building a Levittown in Pennsylvania. Mr. Levitt was the architectural and building genius of the organization and Levitt asked Mr. Klar to "be his brother" and take over all of the functions of marketing and sales, mortgaging and legal work necessary for his newly formed company, Levitt House. That collaboration lasted for many years and the many thousands of homes built by Levitt House had Mr. Klar's unique ability of helping the buyers move into their new homes as easily as possible. In 1975, Mr. Klar's youngest son, Steven, took over the helm of the business and thereafter changed the direction of the company to primarily the development of new homes, with its own internal sales, marketing, mortgaging and legal staff. Henry Klar then embarked on various activities during his retirement to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, including working for various cruise lines with his wife of 63 years, the former Gloria Friedman, at his side. For 25 years, he was either a golf instructor or sports director on world-wide cruises spending anywhere from 70 to 100 days at sea. Sometimes his wife would be the arts and crafts director and he would go along for the ride. Another of his pursuits during his retirement involved spending 10 summers with his wife in Pietrosante, Italy, sculpting from the nearby marble slabs of Carrera. His architectural style brought high prices at various galleries and in sales to friends and acquaintances. Mr. Klar was the father of three sons - Lester, who works for the County of Nassau, Ronald, a medical doctor who specializes in health finance, and his wife Debbie, and Steven, a lawyer and developer. He was also the grandfather of two granddaughters, Laura, a Ph.D. candidate and classical archaeologist, and Jennifer, a civil rights lawyer. A longtime resident of Roslyn, his three sons were Bar Mitzvahed at Temple Sinai. While living in East Meadow in the 1950s, he was founder of Temple Emmanuel and he was a member of the Knights of Pythias for many years. He was an avid golfer, gin and bridge player, and a member for many years at Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich and at Woodlands Country Club in Tamarac, Florida. Mr. Klar died of complications after surgery. The funeral was held at Gutterman's in Woodbury. He was buried at the family plot at Mt. Ararat Cemetery, E. Farmingdale.
