The holidays are a very special time of year. The decorations you have selected will be festive reminders of this holiday season. Below are recommendations to help ensure that you and your family have a safe holiday season.
In 1999, Christmas trees were the first item ignited in an estimated 370 home fires, resulting in 5 deaths, 60 injuries and $15.7 million in direct property damage. The leading type of equipment involved in the ignition of Christmas trees were lights and cords and plugs. (Source: www.nfpa.org)
Recut the trunk at least one inch above the old cut as soon as you get it home.
Put the tree in water immediately after it has been cut. Do this even if the tree won't be set up in the house.
Before mounting the tree in the stand, rinse the stand's water reservoir with a capful of bleach mixed in water. This will reduce the growth of organisms that can block the tree's intake of water.
Avoid placing the tree near a heater outlet, wood stove or fireplace. Put it in the coolest location possible.
Caution: Be careful not to block a door with the tree or rearranged furniture.
Check the water level in the stand daily. Never let the water level go below the bottom of the trunk. Commercial floral preservatives can also be added to the water to help maintain the tree's freshness.
Standard-size holiday tree lights generate heat, which, accelerate the rate of drying. The use of miniature lights produce substantially less heat and thereby reduce the drying affect on the tree.
Do not leave lights turned on for prolonged periods. Always turn lights off when leaving the house or retiring for the night.
Always check light sets for frayed or cracked wires and broken sockets before placing them on the tree.
Remove the tree immediately after the holidays. Caution: Never burn a tree in a wood stove or fireplace. The rapid burning and excessive heat can damage the firebox and chimney creating a serious fire hazard.

When purchasing an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled as fire-retardant. Children are fascinated with Christmas trees. Keep a watchful eye on them when around the tree and do not let them play with the wiring or lights.

Extension cords must be used with care. It is recommended that no more than three sets of lights be used per extension cord. Do not place the cords under rugs or in the paths of travel.
***
Do not use lighted candles or other flaming devices on your Christmas tree or near other decorations.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!
