On Oct. 1, 1990, Kiwanis International made a commitment to a service objective that centers on addressing the needs of children, prenatal through age five. This objective, which the Kiwanis refers to as their current Major Emphasis Program (MEP) is titled "Young Children: Priority One." The purpose of the Kiwanis MEP is to encourage all Kiwanis clubs to find and implement service projects that addresses the same need.

An Advisory Council has been formed to oversee the "Young Children: Priority One" program and includes as AAP staff person as well as representation of the Association of Child Advocates, Children's' Defense Fund, the March of Dimes and National Association for the Education of Young Children. Kiwanis clubs have been urged to support this initiative by implementing new projects that address the needs of young children will relation to:

Maternal and infant health

Child care and development

Parent education and support

Safety and pediatric trauma

This is a special time of year for many people. On Friday, Dec. 12 at Summit Lane School, the Kiwanis Club will host a party for the Developmental Learning Program. This is something the club does on a yearly basis. Santa Claus will give out specially picked toys and some refreshments will be served. If you would care to donate funds for this particular event, please send your check to:

Please save all your soda/drink flip top tabs and all your Campbell soup labels and General Mills box tops and turn them in to the Levittown Kiwanis Club at one of our meetings. You may ask: why labels and soda tabs? The labels and box tops go to St. Jude's Ranch for Children, which they redeem for a monetary amount. The soda tabs go to the Fork Lane School in Hicksville and they give them to the Nassau County Medical Center Burn Unit.
