Tape this to your steering wheel as a reminder ... make sure your child's helmet is on his head before you drive all the way to Brentwood to find out it's still at home. Not a good way to start the day, but the rest of Sunday turned out well. The weather couldn't have been better, and neither could our 7-8 year olds!
On Levittown's first possession, half back Thomas Kelleher ran left and streaked to a 57 yard touchdown. Gerard Cunningham split the uprights for a 2 point conversion to make the score 8-0.
On defense, the Red Devils sizzled. Outside line backer Carlos Valencia saved a touchdown with a huge tackle at midfield. Pressure by defensive end Dylan Thomas caused a fumble, but Brentwood recovered. Defensive guard Ryan Purcell denied a Titans running back a first down. Purcell was big again on the following play, but Brentwood inched to a first down. Defensive guard Jack Kerner made a huge tackle to limit a Titan to only one yard. Then, defensive end Dakota Thomas and defensive guard Ben Bickford tackled their man to force 4th and 8. (Ben lost a baby tooth, but not his cool!) Defensive tackle Sean Gordon was in the face of the half back and denied him a first down. The Red Devils regained the ball as the first quarter ended 8-0.
On 3rd and long, Thomas Kelleher ran 20 yards on an end around. Ryan Purcell (as full back) muscled 6 yards, but a holding penalty and a fumbled snap stalled Levittown's drive. Kelleher punted the ball 25 yards to the Titan's 32.
Once again, Carlos Valencia saved a touchdown with a huge tackle. Levittown buckled down. Defensive tackle Joe Tumbarello tackled his man and limited him to a 2 yard gain. But Brentwood broke through and scored a touchdown. Ryan Purcell denied the extra point attempt run and the half ended 8-6 Red Devils.
The 3rd quarter was a defensive struggle for Levittown. The Red Devils were forced to punt on 4th and 9 due to a questionable holding penalty. The momentum seemed to shift and the Red Devils parents began to pace. "Bash brother" Dakota Thomas read the next play beautifully and stopped his man for no gain (of course, the other "bash brother" is Dylan)! Brentwood toughed out a first down. Carlos Valencia then made his 3rd touchdown-saving tackle on the Red Devils 21. What an asset Carlos is to our team! On 4th down, Joe Tumbarello made the biggest tackle of the day getting the quarterback on a keeper and preserving the lead. The third quarter ended 8-6.
Back on "O," running back Gerard Cunningham got into gear. Gerard has had many fine games this year, but none as brilliant as this one. He ran 80 yards for a touchdown, then scored the extra point run to widen the score to 15-6. Brentwood stormed right back and scored a touchdown on their very first play. Safety Devon Mojica prevented the extra point attempt with a big tackle to keep the score 15-12.
Gerard did it again. He ran 47 yards to the Titans 13. Two plays later, he ran in his 2nd touchdown. 21-12 Red Devils. The Titans had no answer for Levittown's defense. Jack Kerner and Dakota Thomas got to the running back with help from defensive guard Mike Meyerback, and safety James Zebro.
In the 4th quarter, Gerard ran 55 yards for his 3rd touchdown. On the day, Gerard rushed for nearly 200 yards! On the extra point attempt, quarterback Greggory Zoine took a crisp snap from center Thomas Farrell and ran for the end zone. He just missed and the score remained 27-12. Offensive guard Matt Holt provided strong protection for our running backs all game. Defensive guard Joey Amon used his quickness to pressure the Titans, as well as safety Scott Rogan and offensive end Eddy Gillespie. We all wish offensive end J.J. Amon a quick recovery from his broken finger.
Red Devils Black (7-2) has won 4 games in a row and plays its final regular season game at home this Sunday at 9 a.m. Admission is free. Tape this reminder onto your steering wheel too!
