This week The White Lightning was on the road for their first night game, traveling to face what would be their toughest opponent this season, West Babylon. Alex Cohen and Dominick Guidice walked on to the field as co- team captains for the coin toss. West Babylon had won the toss and elected to receive. Right away our defense was to be tested. Our defense line put a valiant fight that evening with many outstanding players making tackles. These players were Amdru Bravo, Kalvin Fabre, Peter Falgiano, Dean Halbohn, Tyler Mack, Anthony Magliano, Michael Mone and Bryan Weber all of whom contributed to White's defense with tackles that stopped West Babylon's offense. One player, whose birthday it was decided to give himself as well as the fans in attendance a great present. That player was Joe "#62" Tracey. Tracey as his teammates call him was all over the field making every kind of tackle imaginable. One of those tackles had him diving to stop a West Babylon touchdown. Dominick Guidice who had several tackles that evening was also there to pick the ball after a West Babylon fumble. White's offense struggled for much of the game. The running backs had a difficult time moving the ball against West Babylon's defense. The running backs were Thomas Dolley, Dean Halbohn, Bryan Weber, Dominick Guidice and Peter Falgiano. The offense line had a tough time containing West Babylon's defensive unit which made running the ball almost impossible. Alex Cohen, our Left End held his position by taking on West Babylon's defense and never giving up even though most of the defenders were twice his size. The rest of White's offense comprised Jimmy Kirk, Pedro Barriga, Tyler Griffen, Matt Kenney, and Christian Magorian. Next week White will travel to face North Babylon. Come on down and catch Pee Wee White in action and catch the White Lightning.
The 7- and 8-year-olds were home this past Saturday at rainy McLaren Field. The Red Devils were looking to build on last week's muddy win over Valley Stream.
Offensive end J.J. Amon's leading block allowed Thomas Kelleher to make Levittown's first down. Halfback Gerard Cunningham then took a hand-off from quarterback Greggory Zoine and ran 45 yards for a touchdown. But Gerard was not done. He lined up a beautiful two point kick that sailed through the uprights. The tone was set. The Red Devils would not look back the entire game.
With the score 8-0, the Red Devils flexed their "D." Outside linebacker Carlos Valencia stuffed an Oyster Bay halfback for no gain. On fourth down, defensive end Dakota Thomas broke through the Rough Rider line to squash a pitch out. Levittown regained the ball on downs at the Oyster Bay 47.
Early in the second quarter, a huge block by offensive end Eddy Gillespie allowed halfback Thomas Kelleher to run for 20 yards. At the Oyster Bay 27, Gerard Cunningham muscled his way into the end zone for the second Red Devil touchdown. Time waits for no man. Gerard quickly lined up and kicked his second two point conversion of the day to make the score 16-0.
Levittown quickly got the ball back and the offense machine was back in gear. Full back Carlos Valencia ran for his first touchdown of the year. However, a minor penalty away from the play called it back. But Valencia ran for a first down on the next play. Dakota Thomas took a hand-off and he was off to the races. He ran 25 yards, lowered his shoulder and flattened a would-be tackler. Thomas then ran another 25 yards into the end zone for the Red Devils third touchdown. Dakota and his brother, defensive end Dylan Thomas, were "beasts" on defense towards the end of the half. Safeties James Zebro and Scott Rogan were also in the mix wreaking havoc on Oyster Bay's running backs. The half ended 22-0.
Early in the third quarter, defensive tackle Joe Tumbarello lowered his shoulder into the opponent's halfback denying him a first down. Then, center Thomas Farrell and defensive guard Jack Kerner gang-tackled a halfback to force fourth and 12th. The Red Devils held and regained the ball on their own 42. On second and 15, halfback Devon Mojica ran 65 yards for a touchdown. Devon played "big" on both sides of the ball all day.
Defensive tackle Sean Gordon sniffed out an Oyster Bay trick play and tackled his man for a big loss. Then, Oyster Bay showed some life by making their first down at the end of the third quarter. Defensive end Joey Amon and Carlos Valencia squashed the Rough Riders' momentum by gang-tackling their halfback. Black recovered a fumble, putting an end to the opponent's threat. Jack Kerner and Scott Rogan stuffed the quarterback sneak on the final play of the game as the Red Devils prevailed 28-0. Defensive guards Mike Meyerback, Ben Bickford and Ryan Purcell contributed their muscle and agility in the win.
Red Devils Black (5-2) will play away at Plainedge this Sunday at 1 p.m. Come join the "family." All you need to do is cheer "Go Red Devils Black!"
