Our 7-8 year olds visited muddy Fireman's Field this past Sunday. It was rainy and the coffee was barely warm. We were hoping that our boys would heat up after last week's tough loss.

On Valley Stream's first possession, they fumbled and Ryan Purcell recovered the ball. Levittown capitalized quickly when Thomas Kelleher ran 35 yards for a Red Devils touchdown! Gerard Cunningham scored the extra point for a 7-0 lead. It looked like the Red Devils would score easily and often, but we were mistaken.

On the Green Hornets next drive, our defense dominated. Joe Tumbarello and Jack Kerner gang tackled the opponent's running back behind the line of scrimmage for a 3 yard loss. Dakota Thomas sniffed out a reverse resulting in another 5 yard loss. Valley Stream punted.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Cunningham and Kelleher each made nice runs to get to the Valley Stream's 23 yard line. Quarterback Greggory Zoine faked a reverse and ran to a first down. But Valley Stream's defense tightened and they took possession on downs deep in their own territory. Sean Gordon and Ryan Purcell both kept the opponent from gaining yardage. But soon after, the Green Hornets got on the scoreboard with a touchdown. Ryan Purcell denied the extra point with a key tackle. The half ended 7-6 Red Devils.

Early in the 3rd quarter, Thomas Kelleher ran 50 yards for his second touchdown! Thomas had a great day rushing for over 100 yards. Who else but Gerard Cunningham "shaked and baked" into the end zone for what turned out to be the most important point. 14-6 Red Devils.

But Valley Stream was hardly finished. Jack Kerner and Dakota Thomas saved a touchdown tackling the running back at midfield. On the next play, the Green Hornets "stung" a touchdown run to cut the score to 14-12. The Red Devils family crossed their fingers when Valley Stream went for the game-tying 2 point kick. It sailed wide and the score remained 14-12 as the third quarter ended.

Red Devil defense reigned supreme in the 4th quarter. Carlos Valencia and Scott Rogan got into the mix with good tackles. James Zebro lowered his shoulder and prevented Valley Stream from a desperately needed 1st down. Words cannot capture how important Purcell and Kelleher were on defense. They showcased their talents throughout the game. Deven Mojica and Dylan Thomas broke through the Green Hornet's line late in the game to stuff runs. Thomas Farrell and Eddy Gillespie's defense was crucial.

On the Red Devil 32 and time running out, Valley Stream was driving. They trailed all day yet there they were ready to score and take the lead. Thomas Kelleher put an end to that scenario grabbing the quarterback for a loss on 4th down to seal the Red Devil victory! Joey Amon, Mike Meyerback, J.J. Amon, and Ben Bickford all played "big" today. Their contributions on both sides of the ball were vital. Red Devil Black is 4-2. Come to the Loring Road field this Sunday at 10 a.m. to catch your Red Devils. The coffee is not the only thing that's hot!
