On Friday, Sept. 12, the depleted Girls' Varsity Soccer team played Plainedge. With seven starters out hurt or playing with nagging injuries, the girls lost a tough one by the score of 4-3. However, they came back from a 3-0 deficit and were knocking at the door constantly. Unfortunately, they couldn't put in the tying goal. All three goals were scored on corner kicks. The first one was a picture play. In practice we set up a play for Kate Schamberger to come in on the corner kicks and try to score. As Megan Sguigna approached the ball to strike it, Kate came running in and volleyed the ball into the net. This gave the girls an uplift that carried thorough the remainder of the contest. The second goal once again was on a corner. Megan put up another great kick and Alyssa Fleming headed it in. The third was an own goal that we gave credit to Megan.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Lady Dawgs won their first league game by defeating Valley Stream South, 3-2, on Gina Brewer's goals (she scored two) with only two minutes remaining in the game. Lauren O'Shea started the scoring with a goal, putting it in from the right side and beating the goalie. The play of the day was made by goalie Jen Macaro as she stopped a head-on shot from only seven-yards away. The game was well played by all.
