New York State Assemblyman David G. McDonough recently announced that the State Assembly Internship Program is currently accepting applications for the 2004 legislative session.
"As Long Island students return to colleges and universities across the state they have the opportunity to take advantage of an outstanding internship program in the State Capitol," said McDonough. "I encourage every interested student, no matter what his or her major, to apply for this program. Interns at the State Capitol gain first-hand experience in the legislative process and earn credits toward their degree."
According to the assemblyman, the Assembly offers two internship programs for qualified graduate and undergraduate students. The session internship for undergraduate students runs from January through May 2004. There are 150 positions available for college students with at least a C+ average. All majors may apply and a $3,500 stipend is provided to accepted candidates.
Session interns are required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week in the daily operation of an office of a state legislator. Interns typically attend Assembly session proceedings, committee meetings, public hearings, research proposed legislation and constituent inquiries. The daily office work is closely integrated with an educational component, which can generally earn a student 15 credits.
Additionally, there are 10 graduate Internships available for interested students. Graduate internships run from January through June 2004 and individuals are entitled to an $11,500 stipend. Graduate students or recent graduates of a graduate degree program in New York State or a resident so matriculated in an out-of-state school may apply.
Graduate interns serve as research assistants or assistant counsels. They must be interested in state government research and policy analysis. Interns are placed with standing committees and commission offices and do research necessary to the development of legislative issues.
Applications for both internships are due Nov. 1. For additional information, contact the New York State Assembly Intern Committee at (518) 455-4704; E-mail intern@assembly.state.ny.us or visit http://assembly.state.ny.us:/internship/.
