During times of war, hundreds of thousands of brave Americans have stepped forward to answer our nation's call. In doing so, they put their lives on hold, leaving their families, their jobs, and, in many instances, their high school educations behind. Upon returning home, thousands of veterans went straight to work to support themselves and their families, never finishing high school.
As a way of thanking those veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War, but were unable to complete their high school education, Governor Pataki and the Legislature came together to create Operation Recognition. This program awards a high school diploma to World War II and Korean War veterans who attended a New York school but were unable to finish their high school requirements due to their military service.
For a veteran to receive a diploma, he or she should contact my office by writing to Assemblyman David McDonough, 3000 Hempstead Turnpike, Levittown, New York, 11756 or calling 731-8830. He or she will have to present either a WD AGO form 53-55. DD214 or an honorable discharge certificate as proof of service. The school they attended immediately before joining the military will then be contacted to issue a diploma. There is no fee or additional requirement.
