The MacArthur varsity softball team captured its first county title since 1992 when they defended the Baldwin Bruins in two straight games in a best-out-of-three series. The Lady Generals entered the Class A tournament as the #1 seed and they ended that way winning five straight playoff games.
In an opening round game against Calhoun, senior Jackie Wellcome hit a bases-clearing triple to put the Lady Generals up 4-0 in the bottom of the first as they went on to win by a score of 7-2. In the quarterfinal game against Oceanside, home runs by Wellcome and Whitney Vecchione put the finishing touches on an 11-0 victory. A triple by Cathleen Schmidt highlighted a 3-run 4th to put the team up 5-0.
The team wouldn't play for another 11 days because of inclement weather but when they did they played their most exciting game of the year. The semi-final game between Long Beach and MacArthur went into extra innings. Long Beach was the defending state finalist and had every intention of getting back into the State Tournament. Both teams had scoring opportunities all game but it was the Lady Generals who got the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth with a 2-out single by freshman Megan Orbon.
Orbon would play a huge role in the County Championship Series against Baldwin. Her single to lead off the bottom of the seventh set the stage for senior Kim Smith. After a sacrifice bunt by Wellcome, Smith lined a single to center scoring Orbon giving the Lady Generals a 2-1 victory in game 1. In game 2, Tara Nowlin started off the game with a single, stole 2 bases and scored on an error. Orbon then stepped up with 2 outs and lined a triple to center scoring Jenna Strauss giving MacArthur a 2-0 lead. Leading 3-1 in the top of the 7th, Vecchione got hit by a pitch, stole 2 bases, and scored on a throwing error. Orbon added and insurance run with a single and a 5-1 victory giving the Lady Generals the Class A County Championship.
Behind the timely hitting and great defense, was the pitching of Leah Bogsted. Bogsted, who was named the Series' Most Valuable Player, pitched every game and allowed only 2 earned runs. She struck out 55 batters and allowed only 21 hits in 36 innings pitched.
Congratulations to the Lady Generals on the Nassau County Championship.
