District Court Halts Enforcement of Nassau's Smoking Ban

Island Trees Varsity Softball
When they left you last, the Lady Bulldogs were on a real high, just beating the best pitcher in Nassau County, Kim Lerch of North Shore HS. Well 10 days later, the Bulldogs were still trying to get the next game in. The county semifinals at Mitchel Field were interrupted by none other than Mother Nature. It seems fitting the way the whole season went with the nasty, cold and wet weather. So, after some tough practices indoors, the game headed over to play the Falcons of Valley Stream South. Not the ending the Lady Dawgs had hoped for, but all in all, it was a great three-week playoff. The game was scoreless after two innings, but the Falcons erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs were able to get two runs back when Lori Brennan led off the sixth with a single. She was moved to second on a fielder's choice by Erin Carroll. Both Lori and Erin scored on consecutive hits by Beth Hughes and Becky Santoriello, who had two hits in the game. Michelle McGurk also had a double and a walk, but it was not meant to be, the Lady Dawgs' season ended with a 6-2 loss. Lauren Poplawski finished her season with her walkless streak, hitting 108 1/3 innings as she walked her first batter in the second inning. Poplawski had a terrific season and should be proud of her new school record.
