In round two of the County Baseball Tournament, the Division Avenue Blue Dragons played top seed MacArthur only to lose 4-2. Juniors Zach Flinn and Joe Seide combined to toss a five-hitter.
The Dragons could only muster up two hits against Dan Horvatt. Brian Frers delivered an RBI hit early and Dan Cooley supplied Division's only other hit.
The Dragons found themselves in a deep hole in round three of the playoffs. They were down 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning but managed to pull off a stunning come-from-behind victory that electrified all of Division's loyal fans who were in attendance.
Junior Chris Lombardo led the inning off with a double, only to be knocked in by an RBI hit by Junior James Hickey. The next two batters struck out, bringing Ray Montoro to the plate. Ray fell behind in the count 0-2, before working the count to 3-2 when he smashed a two-run double to knock James home. Junior Tom Brussel then pinch-ran for Ray. This brought Rob Juliano to the plate, who also fell behind in the count but hung tough, hitting a line drive single to left center, knocking in Tom. When Bellmore made a play at the plate, Rob advanced to second base with some aggressive baserunning. Sophomore Chris Cardone then went in to run for Rob. The next batter up was Dan Devivo, who wasted no time, rapping a long line drive double to knock Joe Cardone in with the game-winning hit. This was one of the most exciting come-from-behind wins in Division history, and with the excitement of the playoffs this was certainly as big a win as you could ask for.
Junior Kevin Gerard came in to pitch two very strong innings on relief to earn the win. Junior Shortstop Dan Cooley sparkled defensively for the Dragons.
In the county semi-final round, Division got a rematch against MacArthur for the second straight season. It was a beautifully played game with MacArthur coming out on top 2-0. Senior Jesse Darcy took his first loss in his two years as a varsity pitcher. Division could only muster up three hits, by Ray Montoro, Brian Chenicek and Dan Devivo.
The Dragons had a great year finishing up in first place, playing in the toughest conference in the county. Of the final five teams left in the tournament, four of them came from the same league schedule (Division, MacArthur, Wantagh and Plainedge). Two other teams, Southside and Garden City, made it to the third round and were eliminated by teams from their own league. This year's regular season games produced competition on the par of playing a Nassau County quarter final game or semi-final game every week of the season.
The returning varsity players from the Blue Dragons can only benefit from the great schedule and exciting games that the Dragons played this year. The Dragons finished the year at 17-7, with two losses coming in extra innings, three losses by one run, and two losses by two runs. The players from Division Avenue HS have nothing to be embarrassed about, taking on the toughest competition in the county and playing them tough in every game.
