On Wednesday and Thursday, the Island Trees Track & Field team continued to improve on its seasonal goals. The Bulldogs had four athletes qualify for the Nassau County State Qualifier Meet. Winning an event at this meet earns you a position to compete in the state championship. Running for the Bulldogs was Rob Lettis, Rob Cruz, Angela Barea and Lindsay Hallas. Over the two days, each athlete achieved a lifetime best performance. Angela Barea ran 17.0 in the High Hurdles, taking second place. Also scoring second was Lindsay Hallas, who jumped 31' 4" in the Triple Jump. Another second-place performance was turned in by Rob Cruz, who ran a 4:57 in the mile. After three second-place finishes, the streak was over as Rob Lettis, competing in the 800m, placed first. Congratulations to Rob who will now go on to compete in the New York State Championship Meet on June 6 and 7. The seventh-grade softball team had a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Merrick Avenue. Down by one going into the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Dawgs scored three times to seal the victory. Rachel Trager pitched a complete game and struck out 14 batters for the win. Down 4-0 early, the Lady Dawgs rallied to within one in the fourth inning. Kristin Vesely started the rally with a triple and scored on a base hit by Rachel Trager. Madlyn Brandstetter, Angela Panebianco and Jessica Giordano also singled to score two more runs. Vesely and Trager started the rally in the sixth with back to back hits and also stole home to score the tying and winning runs. Angela Panebianco sealed the victory with her third hit of the game and second run scored. The eighth grade baseball team's five game-winning streak came to an end against Grand Avenue. Pat Mahistadt had the only bright spot in the game with a clutch two RBI double in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 2. Missed opportunities led to the 6-3 loss, but the Bulldogs look to bounce back at home against Seaford next. The seventh grade baseball team defeated Hicksville by the score of 7-0. Frank Baglivo went the distance, pitching a gem, allowing only two hits and striking out seven. Offensively, Bobby Collelouri, David Darcy, Shaun Rutherford, Keith Konetsky, Eric O'Reilly, Jim Murphy, Zach Hess and Bobby Martinez each picked up a hit. The offensive stars were Joe Cataldo, who was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases and Frank Baglivo who was 2 for 4 with one RBI and three runs scored. The girls' lacrosse team lost a well played game against Salk. Liz Haughney scored her first goal of the season. Valerie Ahrens and Shanon Lehosky also scored. Gina Ciaravino, Nicole Athan, Heather Mitchell and Jackie Buckley moved the ball well on offense. Angelike Paskins played hard on defense, helping Brianna Hahn, who had 17 saves!
