The Division Avenue Baseball Team is off to a good start for the beginning of the 2003 season. The Dragons won their first game, beating Mineola by a score of 6-1. Jesse Darcy was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit, while striking out 15 batters. Ray Montoro and Brian Frers both had two RBIs to pace Division.
In game two, Division beat West Hempstead in a 5 1/2 inning game with Kevin Gerard getting the win, allowing only one questionable hit while striking out 12 batters. Scott Porter had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
In game three, Division beat Port Washington 6-1 under very poor weather conditions. Jesse Darcy got the win. Rob Juliano went three for three and Ray Montoro and Scott Porter each had two hits to pace Division.
In Division's fourth game of the year and first league game, they played the highly regarded MacArthur team who lost in the county finals last year and is the unanimous favorite to be the top team in the county this season. Division was up to the occasion and battled the MacArthur 9 to a 4-3 loss in 10 innings.
This year, Division has a number of returning players who performed well last season, including pitcher Jesse Darcy, first baseman and pitcher Ray Montoro, and pitcher, outfielder Scott Porter, third baseman Brian Frers, centerfielder Brian Chenicek, shortstop Dan Cooley, catcher Rob Juliano, outfielder Sean Joyce and second baseman Mike Kraly.
To go with this group of returning players, Division has a solid group of juniors who have moved up from a very strong junior varsity team from last year, including outfielder Chris Carbone, second baseman Dan DeVivo, pitcher Zach Flinn, pitcher-first baseman Kevin Gerard, outfielder James Hickey, outfielder Chris Lombardo and pitcher Joe Seide. The lone sophomore on this year's Dragon team in pitcher Garrett Douglas.
The Dragons are a young team but despite their youth they expect to continually improve throughout the season and make a very serious run at all comers by season's end.
