Legislator Dennis Dunne announced recently that he is pleased to support a piece of legislation that will create an open space fund for Nassau County. The bill, first proposed by Legislator Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) in 2002, will allow Nassau County to preserve the few remaining acres of natural land for residents to enjoy long into the future.

This legislation will require five percent of the proceeds from the sale of Nassau County land will be placed in a fund designed specifically for purchasing open space. The fund will also be used to rehabilitate and maintain land for future open space projects.

"This piece of legislation is a wonderful legacy that this legislature can leave for our children," Dunne said. "It is going to protect what little open space we have left."

With the creation of this fund, Nassau County will be able to purchase land for cultural, environmental, historic and recreational purposes. The Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee will explore Nassau County for sites that will be considered for purchase.

"This legislation is a brainchild of Gonsalves and is only possible through her hard work and dedication to preserving our environment," Dunne said. "This bill will make Nassau County a more appealing place for years to come."

The bill is expected to pass with bipartisan support at the next legislative meeting on April 28.
