Power Defender Kristy Whelchel with an Island Trees student.

Members of the New York Power participated in an assembly Tuesday at Island Trees Middle School in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Margaret Tietjen, Saskia Webber and Kristy Whelchel spoke to the students about the achievements and importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. Power mascot "Zap" was also on hand to meet and greet the students.

The Power players joined thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, association members, sponsors, students, and parents across the country in support of the day and of this year's theme, "Succeed in Sports, Lead in Life." NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities.

"It's really exciting to come out to a school like Island Trees and share our personal experiences, successes and failures with the students," said Power player and Long Island native Margaret Tietjen.

The players showed the students a highlight video to commence the assembly and shared their personal stories of what involvement in athletics and leading a healthy lifestyle has done for them. In addition, each of the 500 students in attendance received a goody bag filled with gifts from the Power and Women's Sports Foundation.

The New York Power is one of eight professional women's soccer teams that make up the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world's premier women's soccer league. 2003 New York Power tickets remain the same price as last season ($25, $20, $17) and the addition of a $10 ticket with the use of a 10-ticket voucher "Power Pack."
