Kate Murray Takes the Reins as Hempstead Town Supervisor
During a meeting of the Hempstead Town Board held on Jan. 28, Hempstead Town Supervisor Rich Guardino formally announced his resignation after serving as a town official in some capacity for over two decades. Following Guardino's resignation announcement earlier this month, the Republican Party officially nominated Kate Murray, then town clerk, to fill the position. As expected, Murray was voted in by the town board on Jan. 28, with board members voting 5-1 (there are five Republicans and one Democrat on the board).

Charles O'Shea Meets the Anton Press
Charles O'Shea, Chairman of the Nassau County Board of Assessors, visited Anton Communty Newspapers offices on Thursday, Jan. 23, to bring the editors up to date on the ongoing Tax Assessment Project. Mr. O'Shea confirmed the fact that he plans to run for re-election to his post in November and expects to point to the success of the project in his campaign. "Is it perfect?" he asked rhetorically, and answered, "no." "Is it a tremendous improvement? Yes." Did the county get its money's worth? Yes." The money he was talking about is the $34 million contract that Nassau County awarded to Cole, Layer, Trumble, the assessing professionals who carried out the project. Mr. O'Shea said that the contract called for Cole, Layer, Trumble to assess 414,000 parcels of property, making the contract work out to approximately $90 a parcel. Residential properties amounted to 360,000 parcels.

On Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, the Salk Middle School physical education department will be hosting its fifth annual "National Girls and Women in Sports Night" from 7 to 9 p.m. National Girls and Women in Sports Night is a special event for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports.

MacArthur Wrestling Looks for 3rd Consecutive NC Dual Meet Title
The MacArthur Generals are seeded number one in the Nassau County Dual Meet Championships. MacArthur has won the past two years and are looking to three-peat. Many of MacArthur's seniors are off to a fantastic season. Gian Villante, Adam Molano and Matt DeLorenzo are leading the top ranked Generals. All three are ranked number one in Nassau and are striving for state titles.
