The Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling Teams defeated Plainedge 11 - 0. Kim Kapica led all girls with a 163 high game and a 160 average. Heather Rooks was close behind with a 188 high game and a 155 average. The girls also bowled their high series of a 629.
Steve Perkowski led all boys with a 246 high game and a 213 average. Sean Thomson added a high game of 258 and Matt Rottkamp averaged a 204.
The Island Trees Varsity Wrestling team won its match 39-22 over North Shore. The win improved the Bulldogs to 9 - 3 on the season and 2 - 0 in the league. The Bulldogs were led by freshman Joe Cusker and junior Mike Librizzi, who both recorded first period pins. Freshman Dan Eberlein won a big 13-2 decision in the 119-lb. weight class. Seniors James Scrimo, Jimmy Lyons and Rob Bischoff all recorded wins to help the team in this win. Sophomore Mike Cama won a 13-3 decision in the 140-lb. weight class. The match was sealed when heavyweight Greg Schwab recorded a first period pin, using a reversal and Half Nelson to bury his opponent.
The Bulldogs finished in seventh place at the tough Ted Petersen Tournament in Freeport. The Bulldogs placed five wrestlers. Freshman Bryan Henriques took fifth, while sophomore Mike Cama and seniors James Scrimo and Matt Lorenzini all took third place. Senior Anthony Vecchione became the first Bulldog to win the Ted Peterson Tournament since 1997. Anthony rolled through his weight class on his way to his first tournament title.
On Jan. 15 the Varsity Wrestling team took on first-place Seaford in the battle of the undefeated and emerged with a 33-26 victory. The battle began when junior Mike Librizzi took his opponent to his back in overtime and then scored a pin! Key wins from Jim Scrimo and Mike Cama, who defeated his sixth-ranked opponent from Seaford, kept the Bulldogs in the hunt. Close matches from Jim Lyons, Matt Lorenzini and Rob Bischoff kept the Bulldogs ahead. When junior Anthony Vecchione came out and pinned his opponent in the first period, this sealed the win.
The eighth-grade Girls Volleyball team played a fantastic game against a very tough opponent. The entire team helped capture two of the matches and kept Bethpage on their toes. Shannon Lehosky had another tremendous game with incredible hustle and determination. Shannon played very aggressively and saved several key plays. Alejandra Guerra's steady and solid play served up 13 points for I.T. Catie Hollett's serve was also on and she gained many important points for the Bulldogs, helping win the match. Beth Hughes had another awesome game at the net and was extremely intimidating with her tremendous blocks and kills. Tiffany Loken did a nice job at the net with a nice spike. Samantha Rooks, Katie Blauvelt and Meaghan Davis helped Island Trees gain points with their great serves. Lauren Moore, Vanessa Attard, Lindsay Magill and Allison Llorente gave 100 percent and helped keep the score close. As always, Sarah Burleson kept the team morale up and made several great plays on the court. Melanie McGurk, Shuyang Yao, Taylor Burger and Nicole Doller also did a nice job receiving and setting up the ball for the Lady Dogs.
A job well done goes out to the girls seventh-grade Volleyball team on its touch match against Berner. The girls stayed strong and made multiple comebacks throughout the match, but were unable to clinch the win. Angelika Paskins had the serving game of the season, serving six points in a row to tie the two teams in the second game. Valerie Ahrens, Lauren Maniace and Ashley Amador also served well. Kirstin Vesely, Erin Grecsek and Gina Ciaravino made tremendous plays at the net.
In what proved to be the most exciting game of the year, the eighth-grade Boys Basketball team topped the Hawks of Plainview by the score of 67-65. Trailing after four periods by two points, the Dawgs played the most dramatic fifth period in memory, scoring 24 points in just seven minutes behind the blistering shooting of Will Lopez. Will scorched the Hawks for 11 points in the period and finished with a new career high and middle school record of 28 points while adding eight assists. Chris Caragher had a coming-out party of his own as he, too, had a career high of 13 points and nine rebounds as the Bulldog big men played huge under the boards. Jonathan Bartlett had his best outing with seven points and seven rebounds. John O'Connell had seven points and six assists in guilding the troops during the second and fourth periods. John nailed down the victory, coming off the bench with five seconds remaining, to shoot a foul shot for an injured Ever Reyes. Making the front end sealed the game. Brendan Spiess and Matthew Cohen chipped in with four each and Ray McGliola and Ever Reyes both had a bucket. Hustling defense by Rob Fragoletti, Dan Hart, Joe Nilsen, Will Caldarera, John Carey, Matt Tarpy, Kyle Riegel and Paul Fontana, helped to keep Plainview in check for most of the game.
The seventh-grade Boys Basketball team lost a close game to Plainview. The team was led in scoring by Frank Baglivo, who scored a season high 19 points and dominated the third period, when he dropped in 11 points. Bobby Colleluroi was unstoppable from the foul line and had his best game of the season, scoring 10 points. Ronnie Modik also had a strong game, as he added nine points. Also scoring for the team were James Murphy with four points and Jesse Matarese added four as well. Justin Heisig, Arton Lekaj, Joe Cataldo and Rich Grasso all had a basket each as well.
