Football Stars Recognized at Board of Ed Meeting

With the National Football League (NFL) playoffs in full swing, it's fitting that football dominated the Jan. 8 Levittown Board of Education meeting. The MacArthur High School football team dominated an awards ceremony. The squad was recognized for its first ever playoff win and a Nassau County Conference II championship. Generals' players and staff also received numerous individual honors, including Coach of the Year and Outstanding Overall Athlete.

Supervisor Guardino Steps Down
Plans to Lead Suburban Think Tank at Hofstra --
After serving the Town of Hempstead in some capacity for more than two decades, Supervisor Rich Guardino officially announced his intention to resign as town leader during a press conference at Hofstra University Monday, Jan. 13. The supervisor will officially step down during a Jan. 28 town meeting.

Generals Upset Top Seed Port Washington in Overtime Thriller
With the Generals trailing by three (64-61) in a recent game against top seed Port Washington, Senior Tom Orbon connected on a three-pointer to tie the score at 64 with 22 seconds left. After a Port Washington basket, Senior Joe Wilkinson went the length of the floor with four seconds left and beat two Port Washington defenders off the dribble to convert a layup and send the game into overtime. In overtime, with a minute left and MacArthur up 71-70, Joe Wilkinson missed the second of a one and one, but Junior Erik Milks rebound and increased MacArthur's lead to 73-70. Joe Wilkinson finished with a game high 27 points and six assists. Erik Milk had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

MacArthur's Gian Villante Captures Thorp Award
MacArthur HS senior football linebacker Gian Villante has captured both the Tom Thorp Memorial Award and the Bill Piner Outstanding Linebacker Award, two coveted honors in the world of high school football. His outstanding record leading to these awards included 907 rushing yards, 105 tackles, 13 touchdowns and 5 sacks.
