The Levittown School District has had its share of talented athletes. In following that tradition, Levittown has scored a first, with the naming of Gian Villante of MacArthur, the Thorp Award Winner in Nassau County Football. Gian is the third Levittown football player to win this coveted award. Levittown now has a winner in each of its high schools.
The Thorp Award is given to the most gifted football player in the county. The award is voted on by all the football coaches. Gian joins two other Levittown athletes who were also honored in this way. In 1965, Ed Kane, a Levittown Memorial High School student, received this award. Likewise, some 31 years later, Eric Weiden received the award as he led his Division Avenue 1996 football team to the Long Island Championship.
Gian Villante also received the Bill Piner Award given to the best linebacker in Nassau County.
District Director J. Keith Snyder gave as much credit to the Coaches Nick Balitsos, Fred Bruno and Bob Fehrenbach for this honor bestowed on Levittown!
