The eighth-grade Girls volleyball team played an outstanding game at Plainview. The Lady Bulldogs won all four matches with all players contributing to the win and playing exceptionally well. Serving was a definite highlight of the game. Meaghan Davis served 15 points for the Bulldogs. Nicole Doller, Shuyang Yao and Samantha Rooks all served six points for the Lady Dogs. Melanie McGurk and Beth Hughes each contributed five points. Vanessa Attard served four terrific serves and both Allison Llorente and Catie Hollett served for three points. Some outstanding plays were made by Taylor Burger, Lindsay Magill and Samantha Rooks, who each connected for a kill. All of the girls should be proud of their tremendous effort and should look forward to their next game. A job well done goes out to the girls seventh-grade Volleyball team on their first home game against Wantagh. Although the girls were unable to clinch the win, their use of communication and passing skills were apparent. Valerie Ahrens, Marissa Sciacca and Patricia Brewer displayed notable serving, while Angelika Paskins, Gina Ciaravino and Kristin Vesely showed their skill in forearm passing.
The eighth-grade boys basketball team traveled to Viking territory to take on an always tough opponent in Seaford. The Bulldogs exploded to an early 23-7 halftime lead. Seaford battled back with an impressive low post game and took the lead late in the fourth period. To the Dawgs credit, they bent, but would not break. The game eventually came down to a battle of free throws, with the Vikes winning that encounter. Player of the game with game-high honors was Will Lopez with 18 points and five assists. Jon O'Connell netted nine with an impressive game at the point. For the second consecutive game, the Bulldogs had 11 players contribute in the scoring column. Matt Gelormino had six, while Brendan Spiess added four. All with a bucket each were Rob Fragoletti, Ever Reyes, Chris Caragher, Dan Hart and William Caldarera, who scored his first career points. Ever Reyes was just a machine under the boards, ripping down 10 rebounds. Adding a free throw each was John Carey and Jonathan Bartlett. This was truly an exciting game, ending in a 51-49 defeat. This talented group has a great future in front of them.
The seventh-grade boys basketball team battled back against Seaford after getting down early. The team was down by over 20 points before making a huge run in the fourth and fifth periods to eventually cut the lead to within seven points. The team just ran out of time to finish off their comeback. The team was led by Ronnie Modik, who scored a total of 18 points, 12 of which came in the final period. Ronnie was a perfect 8 for 8 from the foul line. Frank Baglivo chipped in 11 points, Justin Heisig had 10 points, Robert Owens scored four, Jesse Matarese had three points and Arton Lekaj and James Murphy each had a basket. The boys should be commended for never giving up and making a huge comeback run.
The Island Trees wrestling team started the season with a second-place finish in the Uniondale tournament. The team was led by seniors Rob Bischoff and James Scrimo who both captured championship trophies. The team had five other finalists. The Bulldogs led the tournament after the semi-final round and they were one match short of capturing the championship. Freshman Joey Cusker had a great tournament going into his first final at 96 lbs. Freshman Bryan Henriques placed third at 103 lbs. Cusker and Henriques add a tough one-two punch to the top of Island Trees lineup. Senior Matt Anderson reached his first final at 125 lbs. Junior Shaun VanHouten lost in the finals to highly regarded Nick Harris of West Hempstead. Senior James Lyons lost a 3-2 decision to top ranked Virgo of Ardsley in the finals. Junior Anthony Vecchione defeated three all-league wrestlers before being defeated in the finals. Junior Greg Schwab rounded out the tournament with a fourth-place finish at 215 lbs.
The Bulldogs won their first match of the season 48-18 over Hicksville. Wins were recorded by Mike Librizzi, James Scrimo, Mike Cama, James Lyons and Rob Bischoff. The Bulldogs then wrestled Lynbrook and escaped with a 39-36 victory. The match was clinched when junior Anthony Vecchione pinned his opponent in the first period. Wins were also recorded by ninth-grade sensation Bryan Henriques, junior Mike Librizzi, senior James Scrimo, junior Shaun VanHouten, senior James Lyons and senior Rob Bischoff.
