MacArthur's wrestling team has won two consecutive dual meet and tournament championships the past two years. The Generals will be showcasing 15 seniors this year. The question is, can the senior leaders steer the wrestlers to a third straight title?
Senior All State wrestlers Gian Villante, Matt DeLorenzo and Adam Molano should bring much experience to the Generals room. Along with league champion TJ Lazarus, the Generals leaders have traveled the country through the off season and have gained tons of valuable mat experience. Other senior leaders, league champ Dylan Reitmayr and league place-winners Mike Catania, Carl Saviano, Brent O'Donnell, Mark Manz, Steve Savin and John Calvacca will all challenge for Nassau County titles. Greg Martorelli, Brian First and Scott Nyer should also contribute to the chase. Newcomer Luke Ingram looks real tough in the unlimited weight class. Coach Greenblatt brags that this is a great bunch of athletes. This is the strongest class of seniors in the history of MacArthur wrestling.
The Generals team also return an army of experienced varsity wrestlers. The question is - will it be enough? Coach Greenblatt expects much resistance from Nassau County powerhouses Massapequa, Farmingdale, East Meadow and Long Beach - though the Generals are currently ranked number one in New York State and Amateur Wrestling Magazine has the Generals ranked as number 22 in the United States. Coach Greenblatt feels real confident about this season. He commented that the Generals have the toughest schedule in the state. They do not schedule weak matches - they run from no one.
The Generals' philosophy is, a quality losing record is better than a watered-down winning record. Some programs water down their schedules in order to achieve a winning record. That is not the way to make it to the top. Though the Generals have not lost a match in years, they still search out the nation's top teams. With their schedule, their level of training and the senior leadership, the wrestlers expect the challenge to three-peat.
