The 2002 fall sports season at Salk proved to be a huge success. All the teams demonstrated dedication and sportsmanship through their hard work at practice and in games. The coaches at Salk worked hard to encourage participation by carrying teams with large rosters.

The highlight of the season was the eighth-grade girls soccer team coached by Enrica Tuccillo. The girls ended their season with an outstanding record of 8-1. Leading scorers on the team were Stephanie Kemfp, Kelly Ryan, Jessica Balling and Melissa Pulsinelli. Jennifer Nolan, Kristen Leverone, Tiana Tsiorvas and Nicole Villone all contributed to the team's winning record. The team's powerful defense only allowed three goals throughout the whole season. Lauren Kenny, Kristina Pinelli and Marissa Milanakis led the defense. Maureen Goodhart and Rachael O'Mara combined in goal for a total of 69 saves.

The eighth-grade boys soccer team completed their season with a 5-2-2 record. Leading the offense were Ryan Stansfield, Will Villatoro and Matt Fellner. Another factor contributing to the boys commendable record were goalies Tom Kelly and Mike Radovich who allowed only five goals each the whole season.

A highlight of the girls seventh-grade soccer team was its game against Wantagh. The girls were behind, 6-3, going into the fifth quarter. The girls endless effort resulted with a comeback tying the game 6-6.

Having another competitive season was the seventh-grade boys soccer team. Leading the defense was goalkeeper Rob Schlener and defensemen Neals Viets, Sean Cox and Brian Zegers.

Salk football ended its season with a 2-3 record. Working hard all season in practice enabled them to improve with each game. This year's quarterbacks were Kevin Ryan, Dan McDermott, Tom Celintani and Dominick Orbon. Other outstanding players were James Sanacore, Tom Zdrowski, Shaquan Hinson, Justin Lacoff, Evan Nechamkin, Paul Tom, Bret Tom, Anthony Daly, Tyler Hunter and Mike Cheshire.

The runners on the cross-country team had a great season as well. The girls dominated the team finishing together first or second in all of their meets. Leading the girls was Regina Musgrove who placed in all of her meets. The boys also had commendable finishes and were led by Patrick Alfisi and Nick Buckley.

Beating our crosstown rival Wisdom Lane was the highlight of the girls badminton team. The team rose to the occasion and won both its singles and doubles matches. Leading the team were Amanda Levine, Marlena Berretta and Alicia Levy.

Representing the spirit of Salk were this year's cheerleaders, Over 40 girls performed at the pep rally to exhibit their school spirit. The cheerleaders did a great job encouraging the student body to participate and support athletics.
