MacArthur High School celebrated its homecoming on Sunday, Sept. 28, by hosting the Calhoun Colts. The game began under ideal weather conditions as MacArthur hoped to improve to 2 wins and 0 losses on the season. The very first play from scrimmage indicated the type of game that this would turn out to be. Dan Walters, Luke Ingram, and Gian Villante all converged on the Calhoun running back and dropped him hard for a 2-yard loss. A defensive struggle was under way, one that would see the Generals escape with a hard earned 7-6 victory.
Calhoun opened the scoring with a 36-yard field goal near the end of the first quarter. The teams exchanged offensive possessions as both defenses played outstanding. The game's only touchdown would come with a little over 7 minutes left in the first half. Calhoun was backed up on their own 1-yard line when Dan Walters made a jarring tackle that caused a fumble. Luke Ingram pounced on the ball in the end zone and MacArthur was on the board with a 6-3 lead. Steve Savin added the extra point to extend the lead to 7-3.
A Calhoun field goal as time expired in the first half cut MacArthur's lead to 7-6. The second half produced no scoring, but plenty of excitement as MacArthur's NickTintle electrified the crowd with his kick returning. Tintle ended up with more than 100 yards of total offense. Twice Calhoun marched into the Generals' territory only to be denied by the opportunistic MacArthur defense. On the first play of the fourth quarter Rick Bruno recovered a fumble on the 24-yard line, ending a Calhoun drive. Late in the game, as the Colts drove for a possible winning score, Adam Molano forced a fumble that was recovered by Keith Nemzer. The Generals ran out the clock for the victory. Terrific performances were turned in by Chris Cain, who was all over the field as he accounted for 9 tackles, and Rick Bruno who had 8 tackles for MacArthur. The Generals now have a record of 2 wins and 0 losses as they head to Carey for a contest against the Seahawks.
