Local communities are planning commemorations on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on America. The communities of East Meadow, Island Trees and Levittown have special memorial events planned for those who lost their lives, which include a candlelight vigil and time for remembrance. All residents are invited to attend.
East Meadow's 9-11 Remembrance, hosted by the East Meadow Fire District in conjunction with the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations (CEMCO), the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the East Meadow Fire District headquarters located at 197 East Meadow Avenue next to the East Meadow Public Library.
The program, which will begin at 7 p.m. will feature a video presentation by the East Meadow Fire District, memorial prayers and a candlelight vigil.
An Interfaith Memorial Service at St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church will immediately follow the 9-11 remembrance program.
All community residents are invited to attend. For further information, please contact Dolores Rome of RMB Drafting Services at 396-0600 or Liz Fries of Legislator Norma Gonsalves' office at 571-6213.
The Levittown/Island Trees community will host a Remembrance Event on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Levittown at 7:30 p.m. This event was organized by Levittown American Legion Post 1711 and includes nearly 40 local organizations and even more individuals.
It is advised for those who cannot stand for the ceremony to bring a chair. The speaker's platform and sound system for this event will be assembled near the flag poles (south side). Residents who drive to the event may park near the HFC Bank or at the Tri-County Flea Market parking area. There will be no parking by the flag pole area. Vendors are asked not to attempt to make any sales during the event. Residents are welcome to bring their own candles but there will be candles provided at the event. Please bring a lighter or matches to light them. Youngsters will require parental permission before being given a candle.
During this "Community Commemoration," the Levittown American Legion, along with the Levittown community and local organizations will join together to remember all the people who lost their lives. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and residents are asked to start gathering a little in advance so the ceremony can begin promptly.
