As the one year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on America approaches, local houses of worship are planning special services and/or memorials to honor those who perished last year and to support the families and friends of the victims. Local houses of worship offering special services include:
In remembrance of the events of and to honor those who died on September 11, 2001, local houses of worship are opening their doors to all persons of all faiths from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11. They invite their neighbors to join them for prayer, meditation and support during the day. Planned events include:
8 a.m. - The Lord's Supper - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation
8:46 a.m. - Tolling of the First Bell - Commemorating the hit on the first tower of the World Trade Center - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation.
10:10 a.m. - Tolling of the Second Bell - Commemorating the hit on the second tower - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation.
Noon - Tolling of the Third Bell - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation.
2 p.m. - Tolling of the Fourth Bell - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation.
4 p.m. - Tolling of the Fifth Bell - Readings from Scripture, Prayers, Music and Meditation.
5 p.m. - Tolling of the Sixth Bell - Closing of the doors.
8 p.m. - Interfaith Service - Wantagh Jewish Center, 3710 Woodbine Avenue in Wantagh.
*Participating houses of worship include: Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (Wantagh), St. Frances de Chantal R.C. Church (Wantagh), St. Jude's Episcopal Church (Wantagh), St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church (North Wantagh), The Suburban Temple of Wantagh, Wantagh Jewish Center, Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church. All houses of worship were asked to sound their bells at specific times - 8:45 a.m. in remembrance of those who died when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center; 9:03 in remembrance of those who died when United Airline Flight 175 struck the South Tower; 9:43 in remembrance of those who died when American Airline Flight 77 hit the Pentagon; at 10 a.m. to remember those who perished when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania and also at noon, in remembrance of all who lost their lives to acts of terrorism.
3434 Hempstead Tpke. in Levittown - Church will be open for prayer on September 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
369 Green Ave. in East Meadow - Church will be holding a service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Community Church is holding a "Days of Remembrance" vigil from September 8 to 11 in the sanctuary at Periwinkle and Cornflower Roads. Vigil will start with a service of remembrance and hope on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the sanctuary and will continue on Monday, Sept. 9 and Tuesday, Sept. 10 with readings of victims' names and their biographies in the sanctuary from 7 to 9 p.m. both evenings. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the vigil continues from 8 a.m. to noon, with pauses for observance of significant moments. Those who may wish to have a particular WTC victim remembered in the commemoration or who want further information should contact the church at 735-6550 with their requests.
3100 Hempstead Tpke in Levittown - On Wednesday, Sept. 11, church will have three morning masses in memory of the victims at 7, 8 and 9 a.m. From noon to 4 p.m. church will hold an exposition of the blessed sacrament concluding with an evening prayer at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m. there will be a special memorial mass on behalf of all who perished on September 11, 2001.
600 Newbridge Rd. in East Meadow - Church will have an Interfaith Memorial Service on September 11 at 8 p.m.
