Community Invited to Sept. 11 Remembrance Event
Levittown American Legion Post 1711 is hosting a remembrance event to honor the victims of Sept. 11 on the anniversary of the attack on America. The Legion is inviting all citizens of Levittown to come together in a commemoration ceremony to remember those who perished in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and those who lost their lives on the airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania. The ceremony will also honor American military service personnel who have died in the battle against terrorism and the members of the service who continue to fight. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Town of Hempstead Veteran's Memorial Park, located on Hempstead Tpke. in Levittown (near the Levittown Public Library). The event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and residents are asked to start gathering a little in advance so the ceremony can begin promptly.
Island Trees School District Capital Improvements Put On Hold
For the last several years, the Island Trees School District placed money in its yearly school budget to fund capital improvements. Historically, school districts always received state aid on the projects in the following year's budget (for Island trees, state aid averaged approximately 58 percent of the cost of the projects) and that state aid was used as seed money for the projects in the next year's budget.
Levittown Trio Shine at Empire State Games
The Long Island Empire State baseball team was ably represented by three pitchers from the Levittown schools. Jesse Darcy from Levittown Division HS and Tom Orbon and Dan Horvat from MacArthur HS each pitched and won games for the Long Island team at the 25th Anniversary Empire State Games in Cortland, NY. The Levittown trio, all entering their senior year of high school, accounted for three of Long Island's four victories, leading the Long Island Region to a silver medal. Dan Horvat pitched a complete game in the team's 11-6 victory over the Hudson Valley region. Jesse Darcy pitched into the seventh inning of a 7-6 victory over the Adirondack region. Tom Orbon pitched a complete game, giving up only four hits, in a game that went nine innings resulting in a 3-2 victory over the Central region. The Long Island team made it to the gold medal game where they lost to a tough team from the Western region. Throughout the grueling three-day tournament, the Long Island trio demonstrated the same competitive, tough discipline that has become the trademark of Levittown baseball.
