The Levittown School District once again offered fourth, fifth and sixth grade students a four-week summer tutorial program under the direction of Ms. Naples. This year marked the third summer the program has been held in the school district.
The program got off to a great start thanks to the help of Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. McCarthy. Throughout the program, students were given the opportunity to practice their reading and math skills in small group setting. Tutors facilitated discussions pertaining to numerous stories and math operations derived from the Steck-Vaughn curriculum.
Students were encouraged to select books from Mrs. Anderson's library collection and upon completing each novel, they summarized and shared the story with their peers.
According to a parent survey, most students spent more time reading this summer than in the past due to their participation in the program. The students also developed confidence and enjoyed working in small groups with their tutors.
For a second year, Dr. Sally Evans was instrumental in coordinating the ESL component to the program. This summer, 13 students were enrolled in the program and worked diligently to sharpen their English language skills. The program was once again successful and facilitators are thankful to the district and proud of all the students who participated.
