On June 30, Island Trees High School graduation took place on the high school football field, in front of hundreds of parents, friends and relatives. Twenty-four hours later, surveyors were planting stakes and workers were removing chain link fencing to allow for the start of the renovation of the high school cinder track.

There is much anticipation, throughout the high school, for a modern, state-of-the-art cushion running track and the construction of field events within the track that will allow for the pole vault, high jump, long jump and discus. With larger class sizes, the number of students involved with the track program has increased but all track meets had to be away at other school tracks because the Island Trees HS track was not sufficient to allow the track officials to sanction any "home" meets. The new track will allow for home track meets and the ability to host other schools at Island Trees.
The new track will also be available for community members who wish to walk, jog or run on the new track. It will contain six running lanes and be properly striped and marked for races at different distances.
The construction is anticipated to take three months. It is further anticipated that all fall soccer and football games will have to be played at other fields for the month of September. The goal is to complete the track in October and have it ready for homecoming on Oct. 26.
