On June 30, the Island Trees Cardinals defeated the Levittown West Cardinals by a score of 5-0 to capture the 2002 Levittown World Series Majors Championship. Under blue skies and temperatures in the 80s, the IT Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on key hits from Frankie Boglivo, Joey Cataldo, Ricky McCurry and John Carey. After adding a run in each of the second, third and sixth innings, pitcher Ronnie Modik dominated on the mound holding the aggressive Levittown West hitters to three hits on the way to the Cards third tournament shutout. With key players Frankie Anselmo, Daniel Cava, Chris Henken, Eric Margaria, Ryan McAdam, Daniel Schulz and Chris Volino, the IT Cardinals developed into a dominating force also capturing the IT Baseball Intramural Championship qualifying the team to represent Island Trees in the Levittown World Series. The boys ended the regular season with an impressive 12-6 record and three playoff wins. They should be commended for their spirited competitiveness always tempered by championship-caliber sportsmanship and fair play.
The coaches and the players of the Cardinals would like to thank Levittown Central, Levittown North and Levittown South Wantagh for their great sportsmanship and competitive play. Special thanks to Levittown West for hosting this year's tournament. Island Trees looks forward to hosting in 2006.
As many of the older Cardinal players and all of the coaches are leaving Island Trees Baseball, the team would like to thank the board for giving the board the opportunity to play organized baseball and a special thanks to President Nick Sguigna for his dedication and support throughout his years as leader of the organization.
