The Island Trees Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 8. The three board members who were elected in May; Kathy Safrey, Robert Condela and Ronald Tauss, all incumbents who ran unopposed; were sworn into office by Attorney David Rubin.
Safrey, incumbent to the position, was elected president for the upcoming school year and Condela, incumbent vice president, was elected to serve again in that capacity.
Also during the reorganization meeting, the district appointed Dorothy Bassemir as district clerk and board of education meetings were scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month. The meetings were scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. in the Geneva N. Gallow School.
Following their reorganization meeting, the board held a regular meeting during which a resolution was passed supporting a four-year negotiated contract with the bargaining unit representing the custodians, maintenance men, monitors and cafeteria personnel. Superintendent of Schools Richard N. Segerdahl praised the efforts of district negotiators Deputy Superintendent Dr. Peter Egan and Business Official Helen Costigan, along with the civil service negotiating team for working hard for a fair and equitable contract. It is hoped that an agreement can be worked out in the very near future with the secretarial negotiating team.
The superintendent reported that all of the summer student programs were underway and running smoothly. He further reported that the summer construction projects at the Karopczyc School, Sparke and Stokes Elementary Schools and at the high school were all underway and ahead of schedule.
