Town of Hempstead Park and Jerusalem Avenue Pool were awash with activity on July 13, for the Annual Lazy Days of Summer Picnic and Bake Off put on by the Levittown Community Council from noon till 5 p.m. Supported by a membership base, the Community Council was able to provide the event for free to the public, said Council President Louise Cassano.
A basketball tournament was held in the afternoon, organized by Pete Ryan, who was assisted by Fred Form. Individual winners were determined by their skill in H.O.R.S.E., a free throw game of elimination. Winners were chosen from each age group, starting from the 5-6-year-old group to the 12-14-year-old bracket. Each of the winners took home prizes.
The bake-off was overseen by Lowell Wolf, second vice president of the counsel, and Pat Tuerlings. The winner was Pam Koroni, for her Hershey's Chocolate Cake. First Runner-up, for his Cookie Toss, was Bill Curran. Second Runner-up was Sue VanBrunt for her Watermelon Cookies. Annemarie Appel's Brownie Pie took Third Runner-up, and Fourth Runner-up was Maureen Hirsch with her Coconut Cupcakes.
For those who were not inclined to involve themselves in athletics or baking, there were a variety of other activities. Entertainment from venues such as 5678-Dance School was provided on one side of the park, with a petting zoo on another side, and pony rides close by. There was also a fishing pond, face painting by Donna Ryan, chairwoman of the event, a bubble bucket, and tables set up with attractions ranging from electric train sets to T-shirts and Monopoly games sold by the Community Council.
The Lazy Days Picnic and Bake-off provided a family environment with fun activities for Levittown area residents. It was clear from the painted faces of the children and the relaxed expressions of their parents that the event was able to provide locals with a satisfying summer Sunday afternoon pastime.
