All of the images of traditional summer fun will come to life at the Levittown Community Council's Lazy Days of Summer Picnic and Bake Off being held this year on Saturday, July 13 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Jerusalem Avenue Pool and Town of Hempstead Park near the East Village Green in Levittown.
The Fifth Annual Lazy Days of Summer Picnic promises all of the fun and activities of previous years including a petting zoo and pony rides from 2 to 4 p.m., face painting and tattoos, basketball contests and a fishing pond for youngsters.
Úquot;The purpose of this event, as it has been all along, is to promote community, to bring people together for some fun and entertainment and to celebrate one of the greatest aspects of living in Levittown, which is open park areas and our magnificent pools,Úquot; said Louise Cassano, president of the Levittown Community Council.
The event, which is provided free by the Levittown Community Council to residents of Levittown and the surrounding communities, attracts between 200 to 250 people throughout the course of the day.
Úquot;Think of good, wholesome family fun and you'll have an idea of what this picnic is,Úquot; said Donna Ryan, council vice president. Úquot;There will be entertainment throughout the day, for toddlers, teens and adults and some of our community organizations will be on hand to provide information about what their groups do.Úquot;
This year, Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers will have a model train display set up at the event barring inclement weather. Úquot;We're very excited about the participation of this groupÚquot;, said Cassano. Úquot;Model trains are a hobby many families enjoy and we think it will be an attraction for lots of families.Úquot;
Another popular event of the day is the Old Fashioned Bake Off Contest in which residents are invited to enter their favorite baked item to be judged by a panel of local tasting experts. A prize will be given to the first place winner and second, third and honorable mention will receive ribbons
Úquot;Actually, none of these judges have cooking school credentials. Their only measure of expertise resides in their taste buds,Úquot; Cassano said jokingly. Úquot;This is old-fashioned, hometown, friendly fun and competition.Úquot;
Anyone who wishes to enter the bake-off should bring his or her baked item to the judging area at the East Village Green pool area at 1 p.m. Judging will take place at 1:30 p.m.
There are no provisions for keeping baked items refrigerated, warns Lowell Wolf, second vice president of the council who is chairing the bake-off effort along with Pat Tuerlings. If the baked items are perishable, the baker should provide for keeping it cool, continued Wolf. Following the judging, participants may donate their baked item to the dessert table for everyone to enjoy.
Organizations from Levittown and the surrounding areas who wish to set up a table to exhibit are invited to do so. Organizations may provide family entertainment, if they choose or set up a display.
The Levittown Community Council is an umbrella group of residents and community organizations in Levittown and the surrounding area. Its purpose is to develop and maintain pride and unity within the community by working collaboratively to support the work of local organizations.
