(The following letter was submitted to the Levittown Board of Education and Commissioner Mills. It is being printed here at the authors' request, on behalf of the over 400 residents who signed it).
As a community, we have either read or witnessed the manner in which the Board of Education of Levittown, along with its administration, conducts business on behalf of the people - the taxpayers of Levittown.
As you are all well aware, the past three board meetings, inclusive of the Public Be Heard, have been most disheartening and inexcusable, to say the least. Your continued allowance of intolerable behavior displayed by both members of the board and administration is a constant reminder that we have made very poor decisions as taxpayers when we voted and supported your campaign for office.
As the elected members of this community, who live and work here as we do, we the attached 428 taxpayers are asking that you reconsider the previously accepted resignation of Dr. Gary Schorr, principal of Abbey Lane Elementary School. We unanimously feel that unwarranted internal political pressure had been placed upon him, forcing him to resign, without due cause, reason or circumstance.
As the elected taxpayers and representation of our community, we appeal to you to request that Dr. Schorr withdraw his resignation. Countless letters of admiration and commendation have already flooded your office with regard to the outstanding work performance of Dr. Schorr.
We will also reintroduce and have attached the statement presented to you on March 11, at the board meeting, by the teachers and staff of Abbey who had equally stated their disbelief and astonishment in what was done to Dr. Schorr.
We, the attached 428 taxpayers stand together as one voice but equally relevant as individuals of tax votes, want to see Dr. Schorr reinstated and continue as our principal at Abbey Lane. We urge you to correct the previously made error and begin to show the taxpayers that there might be some hope to begin once again to rely on our elected board members to truly carry out the wishes of the people they represent. Furthermore, the board and its administration should not institute decisions based on the one, or the few, but for the betterment of the whole.
The attached petition and its cover sheet, along with the teachers statement dated March 11, has been forwarded to Commissioner Mills, as an official appeal, so that he may intervene and rule over our board and administration. It has become very clear that the commissioner's work here in Levittown may have just begun. We have some serious issues that are obviously not being handled appropriately. Public discipline, and or removal, justified by those who have been mistreated and or abused by the salaried employees and elected members of the district is a start, unless of course you condone this type of behavior and representation for the Levittown Board of Education. Somewhere in your set of rules and or contracts of the administration must be safety nets that have been implemented by the board to assure that the taxpayers are not ruled by, but still the employer of these decision makers.
We are hopeful that you will do the right thing and reinstate Dr. Schorr and correct the wrong doing forced upon Dr. Schorr and the children of Abbey Lane. We urge you to address this matter immediately and save yourselves and the Levittown Community from the embarrassment and negative publicity that the commissioner's involvement will begin to our community. Restore our faith in you, the elected officials of our community.
