Haps Scholarships Awarded
Four local graduating seniors received Certificates of Award totaling $4,000 in the 13th Annual William A. Haps Scholarship Awards ceremony, held at Wantagh Fire Headquarters, Tuesday evening, June 4. The students all live within the Wantagh Fire District and attend MacArthur, Wantagh, Island Trees and the Seaford High Schools. Each student will receive $1,000 on entering the college of their choice.
Division Avenue Scholarship Created in Fireman's Memory
Robert Parro and his wife, Karen, both graduated from Division Avenue High School. This year, a $1500 scholarship was given in Parro's name to a Division Ave. senior. This appears to be an ordinary occurrence until one finds out that Parro was a firefighter who lost his life on Sept. 11.
ITHS Hosts Athletic Banquet
On Monday, June 3, the Island Trees High School Athletic Banquet was held at the Imperial Manor. Christina DeMott and Matthew Ostrowski were the recipients of the Ted Petersen Scholarship. Lisa Macchia was the recipient of the Rita Benson Scholarship. Jodie Schoppmann and Matt Ostrowski received the Armed Services Award. The Fanfare Scholarship, which is an award that acknowledges the spirit of cooperation between the athletic and music departments, and to recognize an individual who excels on the playing field as well as in music, was given to Jodie Schoppmann. Joseph Swiciki and Christopher Wierzbicki were the recipients of the Island Trees Hockey Scholarship. Pat Iannone, Greg Thomson, Mike Thompson, Matt Ostrowski and Jeremy Small were the recipients of the Island Trees Baseball League Scholarship. A.J. Latuputty, Mike Santor, Stephanie Lucia, Danielle Cama, Julio Barea, Peter Kostaras, Matt Ostrowski, Elena O'Brien, Chris O'Brien and Joe Swicicki were the recipients of the Island Trees Soccer Club Scholarship. Varsity Wrestling Coach Damian Garcia was chosen as the Doris Uhlig Coach of the Year by his peers. Lisa Macchia and Richard Catherall were voted Outstanding Athletes of the Year by the Island Trees coaching staff.
Levittown PAL Lacrosse Tomahawks Complete Another Successful Season
This weekend marked the end of another successful season for the Tomahawks with a great time had by all. On behalf of P.A.L., I would like to thank the coaches for their time, effort and dedication to their teams and the program, without them we wouldn't exist. Just a reminder that the awards brunch will be held on Sunday June 23rd at 10:00 am at Antuns restaurant in Hicksville. The season ending results are as follows:
