The MacArthur Generals baseball teams finished tremendously successful seasons on all three levels, varsity, junior varsity, and junior varsity "B." The varsity completed the season with 23 wins and four losses, ranked number 4 overall in New York State. They earned a spot in the Nassau County Championship before bowing out to a very strong team from Clarke High School. The Generals drew a very tough playoff bracket and came through it undefeated. The week of May 20 was an exciting one as the Generals won four consecutive playoff games to get to the finals for the fifth time in the last 10 seasons. The week opened with a 4 to 1 win over Division Avenue, highlighted by Jason McCorry's outstanding pitching. Jason threw a four-hitter and struck out 10. Sophomores Nick Manfredo and Adnan Kahraman had RBI hits for the Generals. The next day MacArthur played the Wantagh Warriors. This was a thrilling game as the Generals came from three runs behind to win in extra innings. Chris Sipp and Mike Calabrese each had two hits and Frank Virga provided seven shutout innings in relief. The winning run came when Spencer Cohen alertly scored on a Wantagh error. The Seaford Vikings were next up for MacArthur, and once again the Generals fell behind by three runs early on. They battled back to tie the game in the 4th inning on hits from Chris Sipp and Adnan Kahraman. In the fifth inning MacArthur went ahead to stay on an RBI double off the bat of Dan Horvat. Tom Orbon earned the win on the mound, settling in after a rocky first inning to throw six shutout innings. Meanwhile, the Division Blue Dragons were fighting their way out of the loser's bracket for another date with MacArthur. Dan Horvat took the mound for the Generals and was dominant. His one-hit shutout put the Generals in the finals. The final score was 6 to 0 and the offense was powered by great base running. An example was Ed First's steal of home as part of a double steal in the fifthth inning.
All in all it was a highly successful season for the Generals. They started the year with many question marks as a young team attempting to replace 15 seniors from the 2001 season. Next season 18 players will return, including seven of the starting nine. Graduating seniors Mike Calvacca, Scott Fitzsimmons, Ed First, Jason McCorry, Andrew Wachtel, and Anthony Valanzano all provided outstanding leadership. Many players received awards from the Nassau County coaches. Senior Jason McCorry and Juniors Chris Sipp and Dan Horvat were voted All-County. Senior Andrew Wachtel and Juniors Tom Orbon and Frank Virga were honored with All-Conference selections. Juniors Mike Calabrese and Mike Ackerman were named All-League. Sophomores Adnan Kahraman and Nick Manfredo were named Honorable Mention All-League. In addition, Jason McCorry won eight games this season, giving him 25 varsity wins over his four-year career. This makes him the second winningest pitcher in MacArthur history. Frank Virga posted the third highest league batting average in MacArthur history, .510.
The next few years at MacArthur should be very successful. The JV Generals posted an undefeated season with 19 wins and one tie. The JV "B" also had great success, winning 14 games and losing 4. This means that overall the MacArthur baseball teams won 56 games and lost only seven during the 2002 season. All the members of the MacArthur baseball program should be very proud.
